“The Butcher, the Baker,
Cheese and Winemaker”
When Charles Back I, first landed on the shores of the Cape from Lithuania, his passion for local produce led him to pursue becoming a butcher. In 1937, he bought the Fairview farm.
As a third- generation family owner of Fairview, Charles Back II has continued this legacy, taking what he has learned from his winemaking father, Cyril, to continue nurturing the land. Adding ‘cheesemaker’ to the family repertoire, today the Back family really are a collection of butchers, bakers, wine and cheesemakers! In 2015, Raphael joined the clan, partnering with Charles to create Back’s Restaurant & Delis.

Concept
Back’s has 2 main offerings – it is a bistro-style restaurant and well-stocked fresh and dry goods deli and wine cellar.
Back’s restaurant and deli has the purpose to continue the tradition of Back’s family values and offers delicious, homegrown cuisine.
Produce
Everything in our restaurant and deli is sourced from either Charles Back’s farms – Fairview Wine and Cheese and Spice Route Destination – or from local artisans in the area. This ‘locavore’-style offering comes naturally to the Back’s family, thanks to their long lineage of farming and their understanding of the fundamentals of everything being grounded in integrity and quality. At the end of the day, the Back’s goal is simple: we want to bring you free-range, organic produce that just tastes better – just like it should.
Fairview Wine & Cheese is Back’s older sister.
The two companies are very closely linked.
